What is Photobiomodulation?

The conversion of light energy into biological vitality.

1. The Discovery

Photobiomodulation (PBM) was first observed in the 1960s when scientists noticed that low-level laser therapy could accelerate wound healing. Since then, research has refined our understanding of how specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light interact with human tissue.

2. The Cellular Process

When red light photons are absorbed by cells, they increase the energy production within the mitochondria. This leads to an increase in ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the primary energy currency of the cell. With more energy available, cells can function more efficiently, supporting natural repair and regeneration.

3. Why it Matters

As we age, our cells naturally produce less ATP, leading to slower recovery times and increased inflammation. Red light therapy is used by dermatology professionals to support skin health and by athletes to aid in muscle recovery. It offers a gentle, non-invasive way to support the body's natural processes.

See What Happens Beneath the Surface

Interact with the scientific parameters of light penetration.

Selected Wavelength: 630nm

Epidermal Reactivation

At 630nm, light is absorbed primarily by the cellular structures of the epidermis. This is highly effective for promoting turnover, minimizing fine surface lines, leveling pigmentation spots, and strengthening the critical moisture barrier function.

Penetration Depth:

1.5 mm

Primary Target:

Epidermal Keratinocytes

Biological Output:

Barrier Repair & Melanin Regulation

Selected Wavelength: 850nm

Dermal Collagen Stimulation

At 850nm, near-infrared light penetrates past the epidermis into the dermal layer, where it is absorbed by mitochondria in fibroblast cells. This stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis, accelerates wound healing, reduces deep inflammation, and promotes microcirculation for enhanced tissue repair.

Penetration Depth:

3.5 mm

Primary Target:

Dermal Fibroblasts

Biological Output:

Collagen Synthesis & Anti-Inflammation

Selected Wavelength: 1072nm

Subcutaneous Deep Therapy

At 1072nm, deep near-infrared light reaches the subcutaneous tissue and underlying structures. This wavelength excels at reducing deep-seated inflammation, accelerating bone and joint recovery, stimulating neural repair pathways, and enhancing systemic circulation for whole-body therapeutic benefits.

Penetration Depth:

5.0+ mm

Primary Target:

Subcutaneous Adipocytes & Nerves

Biological Output:

Deep Tissue Repair & Neural Recovery

Empirical Inquiry

Red Light Therapy: Myth vs Science

Clarifying biological facts from marketing fiction.

Myth 01

"More light intensity is always better for faster skin recovery."

Science Basis

Treatment outcomes depend heavily on accurate wavelength, precise dosage, and exposure frequency. Flooding tissues with excessive, unregulated light can actually cause cell stress, whereas coordinated, measured doses yield optimal biological repair.

Myth 02

"Red light therapy only works on surface skin cells."

Science Basis

Near-Infrared and deep infrared wavelengths penetrate deep below the epidermal and dermal layers, interacting directly with muscle cells, deep capillaries, and nerve ending receptors to stimulate systemic tissue repair and overall body recovery.

Myth 03

"You will see permanent biological results instantly."

Science Basis

While hydration and warmth offer an immediate glow, lasting cellular remodeling takes time. Noticeable, structural skin longevity changes require consistent treatment over 4 to 8 weeks as your tissue constructs healthy, new collagen matrices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions about Halio skincare devices and practices.

We turn clinic-inspired light therapy into sleek, lightweight devices you'll actually use every day. Our devices are developed under a board-certified dermatologist's clinical leadership and backed by a 2-year warranty. More than 4.5 million devices have been sold worldwide.

Red and near-infrared light reach below the skin's surface, where your cells turn it into energy. That energy supports collagen, calmer skin and recovery. Our clinical work is led by Dr. Ted Lain, a board-certified dermatologist and Halio's Chief Clinical Innovation Officer, and every claim we make has to meet his evidence standard.

Most people notice smoother, brighter skin within about 4 weeks. Firmer skin and softer fine lines usually show after 6 to 8 weeks. The real cheat code is consistency: use it, don't ghost it.

Yes. All Halio devices are non-invasive and designed for daily use at home, and our LED devices emit no UV light. If you have sensitive skin, start on the lowest intensity. If you're pregnant or have a medical condition, check with your doctor first.

Just 10 minutes. Slip on the hands-free LED Mask Pro while you scroll, or use the RegenBoost after a workout. Big results don't need a big time commitment.
