IPL (intense pulsed light) sends short flashes of broad-spectrum light, from 560 to 1200nm with UV filtered out, into the skin. The pigment in your hair absorbs this light and turns it into heat at the follicle, which disrupts the hair growth cycle.
Because hairs grow in cycles and only follicles in the active growth phase respond, results build over several sessions. Expect gradual, long-term reduction rather than instant, permanent removal.
IPL targets melanin, the pigment in hair, so it works best on darker hair against lighter to medium skin. It won’t work on white, grey, blonde or red hair, because there isn’t enough pigment to absorb the light. It isn’t safe for very dark skin tones either, since the skin absorbs too much energy and the risk of burns goes up.
Check the skin tone and hair color chart in the manual, and do a patch test 24 hours before your first full session.
Use it every 2 days for the first month, then switch to maintenance sessions every 2 weeks, adjusting based on regrowth. Using it more often won’t speed things up.
Only about 20–30% of hairs are in their active growth phase at any time, and IPL can only affect those, so correctly spaced sessions matter more than frequent ones.
Most people see visible reduction within 3–4 weeks. Full results usually take 2–3 months on a consistent schedule. Each session catches a new set of hairs in their growth phase, so results build over time.
When used correctly, yes. The sapphire contact surface cools your skin to 10°C during each flash, so most people feel a warm snap at most. UV light is filtered out, and a skin-contact sensor stops the device from flashing unless it’s pressed flat against the skin. Start at a low intensity and work up, and always wear the goggles included in the box. Don’t use it over tattoos, moles or dark pigmented areas, or near the eyes, eyebrows or scalp.
If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor first.
